What it's like to fish for Jesus
January 7, 2024 Preacher: Pastor Omer Mascarina Series: Stand Alone Message
Scripture: Luke 5:1–11
MESSAGE: "What It’s Like to Fish for Jesus" SCRIPTURE: Luke 5: 1-11
SERMON OUTLINE:
I. Rely on God’s Command (vv.4-5)
II. Realize God’s Capability (vv. 6-7)
III. Recognize Man’s Condition (vv.8-10a)
IV. Respond to God’s Calling in your Life (vv.10b-11)
GROUP INTERACTION QUESTIONS:
1. Peter was busy washing his nets (Luke 5:2), but Jesus asked him to take him out in his boat.
How do you react when Jesus interrupts your schedule or goals?
2. How hard do you find it to submit your greatest area of competence or ability or capability to
Jesus’ authority. Describe a time when Jesus showed you that he was far greater than your
greatest competence or ability or capability. How did this build your faith?
3. Recall what Simon Peter said when Jesus commanded him to take the boat out again in
Luke 5:5 (NASB) - Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught
nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.” Simon obeys out of duty as a
seaman obeys his skipper.
a. But what attitude is he harboring inside?
b. Do you express the same attitude toward the Lord? If so, can you pinpoint why?
Do the immediate problems seem overwhelming?
Have you already tried and failed? Are you afraid of being disappointed?
4. For Simon and his business partners, fish equaled money.
* How would you expect him to respond to this large catch of fish?
* What do we find him doing instead? What is strange about that?
Verse 11 says that Peter and his partners “left everything and and followed him [Jesus]”.
* What do you think “leaving” means for us today?
* What is keeping you from metaphorically leaving everything and following Jesus?
5. Is there any area in your life that you haven’t submitted to the Lordship of Jesus Christ that
you would like the group to pray about? Pray together as a group.
