MESSAGE: "Don’t Drift" SCRIPTURE: Hebrews 2: 1-4 (and Selected Scriptures)
SERMON OUTLINE:

Main Idea: Don’t drift from Jesus.

I. Because Drifting is Dangerous (2:1, 3)

II. Because Jesus is Better (2:1-4)

GROUP INTERACTION QUESTIONS:
1) Be honest with yourself. Ask the Lord to help you examine your soul as you seek to
answer the following questions:
· Have you drifted from Christ? Do you feel far from God? Why do you think this is so?
· Would you say you are more zealous for Him now than last year?
· How are you doing in the areas of the spiritual disciplines: Bible reading, prayer,
personal evangelism, church fellowship, service?
2) What are some of the early warning signs of drifting from God? Why is spiritual drift so
dangerous?
3) Here are some remedies for spiritual drift (adapted from Mark Furlong). Which one do
you think you need to implement most right now?
· Submit your mind and heart to the truths of God’s word (John 17:17; Romans 12:1-2)
Cry out to the Lord for an intense craving for God’s word (Psalm 119:36-40; 1 Peter 2:1 2).
· Regularly deal with issues of the heart (Hebrews 3:14-15)
· Stay connected to encouraging believers (Hebrews 3:13)
4) For further reading, here is a summary of Octavius Winslow’s 6 solutions to dealing with
spiritual declension (or drift) in our lives:

• Solution 1: Acquaint yourself with the real state of your soul before God. Be honest with your-
self. The backslider in heart can deceive himself and others but not God who searches and

knows the heart.
• Solution 2: Find out the root cause of declension. Don’t rest until it’s discovered.

• Solution 3: Take it to the Lord and lay it before the throne of grace. God loves a broken, con-
fessing sinner. Lev. 26:40-42. Psalm 32:5; Jeremiah 31:18-20; Jer. 3:13; 1 John 1:9; See

the posture of a soul returning to God (Hosea 14:1-2)
• Solution 4: Mortify it (Colossians 3:1-17). Seek to put away the very sin which is causing you
to drift from Christ.
• Solution 5: Fill the mind with the power, glory, and love of Christ. Love of the world drowns out
love for God.
• Solution 6: Set out to pursue God like never before. “Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation”
(Psalm 51).
